The green district (1)

Germany is full of green technology, obsessions with green lifestyle and consumption, damn wealthy and mixing coolness and conservatism in an unhealthy way. – Of course this is a modern stereotype and nothing else! Nevertheless there is a place in Germany that comes so impressively close to the personification of this stereotype; it is almost scary.

This time I will not take you to an autonomous commune or an illegally squatted territory. I will take you to a provincial middle sized city instead – with an entire environmentally friendly quarter and a Green-party major and a renewable energy policy. Quite bourgeois.

Our aim is the city Freiburg in south-west Germany.
Hitchhiking in and out of Freiburg is extremely easy: drivers are used to pick up hitchhikers on their way from or to the city centre. Once you get there, the best place to explore the green image of this place is Quartier Vauban …
